MAY RESULTS- In my work we always said, “It’s better to be lucky than good!” Well, when you’re both lucky AND good you’ve got a pretty nice shot at taking home the winning gallon of fuel. During the May 14th POKER FUN-FLY, when 14 club-members participated, Keith Ellis had just the right combination of whatever it takes- He flew the necessary patterns to earn that elusive and coveted winning poker hand. Congratulations, Keith!!!
JUNE 11th “LIMBO” FUN-FLY- Both electric and fuel-powered planes will be eligible. Planes successfully flying under the paper ribbon will qualify to attempt the next lower setting. Pilots will have one pass at each height. Touching either the ground or the ribbon will eliminate any pilot from further efforts… Hitting either vertical upright is to be discouraged, for aesthetic and pragmatic reasons alone but also will disqualify the pilot!
Please be prepared to start up at 6:30 pm for this event… The business meeting will follow the LIMBO.
BENCHES
According to the consensus of those members present at the last club-meeting, 3 additional “SAFETY BENCHES” (a term some might take issue with but derived from common usage) have been made up to join ranks with the prior 3.
An ad hoc ‘Bench Committee’ consisting of Steve Sneller, Jim Trump and myself was formed and we concluded that there should be plenty of space to accommodate all styles and preferences for aircraft start-up:
---It is clear that some members prefer to start-up with their planes on the GROUND, perhaps restrained with a rope or bungee fastened to a post. This style is very useful- almost mandatory- for large planes.
---Others prefer the tried-and-true FLAT BENCHES + CHOCK-BLOCKS. Smaller planes, like pylon racers, and helicopters are well served on these platforms.
---Many, especially those with mid-size planes, prefer the features which the SAFETY BENCHES offer.
The committee decided that the six SAFETY BENCHES could be positioned in a row with 2 ½ to 3 feet separating them so that maneuvering with a powered-up plane would be both safe and manageable. And, this arrangement does leave a broad expanse of open mat with a number of accessible posts for those who prefer the GROUND start-up technique.
All benches are moveable and mats can always be added over grass, but this described set-up represents our best first effort, without ‘reinventing the wheel.’ Hopefully, it will do the trick and all members will feel well served…
Terry Brown, Tom Leach and others are presently working on gathering materials for the resurfacing the flat benches. Furthermore, the foam-padding on the uprights of the older 3 SAFETY BENCHES will soon be restored as well.
Shortly, we should all be experiencing what can only be described as some SERIOUS START-UP ENHANCEMENT… ENJOY!!!
Have a fine month…
